Units arrive Friday night and set up camp.  Saturday morning, we will feed you breakfast and then give some basic paddle training, have some fun loading and unloading canoes and then its off to a 15-mile float down the Colorado.  Lunch will be provided mid-float.  After the float there will be a service project and then a cooking competition featuring BACON!  For Those scouts and leaders who do not wish to paddle the river can participate in the rank advancement activities at the base camp.  Saturday Dinner and Sunday breakfast are the Unit responsibility.  Saturday Dinner will include the competition and the “secret” ingredient.

Requirements:

Only a couple of the Canoe Merit Badge requirements are covered here.  The goal is to have a fun canoe experience.  Most Scouts can participate with a little training that we will provide. Prior Canoe experience for Scouts is not required.

1. This is a fun paddle trip. Scouts do not need to be swimmers. PFDs will be worn at all times on the water and the unit scouters must be trained as per Safety Afloat standards.
2. Units must have a Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat trained leader (Available On-Line)
3. Units should have a CPR Trained Leader. (Contact Roy Hollis for Training Options.)

Units do not need to provide any canoe equipment or life vests, but they should be prepared to be able to:

Load basic Patrol equipment in a water-proof way and tie it down properly for a for a day trip down the river.
Scouts need to dress appropriately for the river trip. Refer to the Canoe Run Packet for information on proper dress. Each scout needs to bring the 10 Essentials for Canoeing. They will be checked for this in the Contest before launching.

The Cooking Competition:

Patrols will make an entree, side dish, and desert at Saturday dinner. Each dish will use the “secret ingredient”- BACON. Each patrol should make enough for themselves and three judges. Don’t forget the BACON!
